The Winter semester is now in session and consequently, Congress meetings are back on the agenda! This week was marked by club-related discussions as Join a club day draws near, but what is this? Could it be a Mr.Puffs discount? Keep reading to find out!
New Congress Office Hours
As the new semester begins, Congress members will be setting up their new office hours to fit their new schedules.
Closed door Sections of Congress Meetings
A proposal has been made for Congress to have an in-camera section during their weekly meetings when needed, during which Congress members can discuss and brainstorm away from the public. Congress insists that this is by no means an attempt to infringe its transparency policy. It is merely a tool that may occasionally be used to avoid misleading discussions and compromising thought processes being divulged to the public. The conclusions of the topics discussed will be given to MWR as a statement, which MWR can include in their Congress Weekly articles.
After contacting and negotiating with the supplier, the new MSU hoodies will be ready to launch following the Student Survey. Click the link to see the promotional video: https://streamable.com/hd1st3
A proposal for an Animal Zoom session has been brought up, where students can bring their pets on camera during a session of AP and other students can fawn over all these cute animals. More information pending.
Congress is planning a collaboration project with Les Impatients to start a mental health initiative for students. After bringing the proposal to the Academic Dean, the administration will provide 1400$ for this project. The payment to Les Impatients will be made after students sign up.
Les Impatients is a community service that organizes various kinds of artistic workshops to promote mental health. While the art therapy workshops are by no means equal to one-on-one appointments with professional therapists, they are much more casual and manage mental health in a more relaxing fashion.
If possible, the workshops will be taking place on campus in person, with all appropriate sanitary measures in place. If not, the project may be pushed back and might use the summer semester, depending on student feedback. If not, the facilities of Les Impatients are available, one place being close to Côte-des-Neiges metro station.
Mari CARE (Marianopolis Community Action/Response Event)
CARE was an online challenge-themed fundraiser organized by the Charities and Volunteering Committee through a collaboration with 21 clubs. The CARE video campaign was launched during Block 1 and, within a week, collected over $1.1k for four local non-profits: Sun Youth, the Welcome Mission Hall, the Canadian Mental Health Association and the Human Rights Campaign. Watch the students and teachers who reached their donation goal take on their challenge Feb 1st! The event was already promoted by Congress on social media. Go take a look!
Endorsement of the GNL/Gazoduq Letter
The GNL/Gazoduq letter to the Federal minister has been completed in both English and French. The whole process has required 15 students from the GreenTeam and Mari Law sifting through 800 pages of documentation. A social media campaign will be launched in the beginning of February with Congress’ support and endorsement. However, Congress emphasizes that this is an independent student project and Congress is not trying to take any credit for it by endorsing.
End of Semester Reports
As per Congress bylaws, an end of semester report for Fall 2020 will be needed from every club. Of course, it will not be public. This is a reminder to club executives to also write the end of semester reports for their respective clubs.
Speaking of the survey, please take a few minutes of your time to answer the Student Survey about student mental health on Omnivox. Your feedback is crucial for Congress and the administration and will impact the collaboration with Les Impatients and, slightly off topic, the hoodies.
Mr Puff Student Discount
Pratham spoke with the Mr. Puffs manager, who has agreed to give Marianopolis students a 10% discount. Pratham and Anne will work on making this agreement official. The entire student body will surely be grateful for this momentous accomplishment!
Again, a reminder to everyone that the weekly Congress meetings are open to the student body. If you are interested in attending, you may contact a Congress member for the meeting link.
Zoom Pro for Clubs
Congress had been considering buying a Zoom Pro account for clubs to use during their activities. However, Student Services already has such an account that is available to clubs, therefore, after discussion, it has been decided that unless this already existing account is no longer enough to cater to all the student activities, Congress will not purchase another account.
We would like to remind that if club executives would like to use the Zoom Pro account for activities, they can contact Trudy Ste-Croix as soon as the date and time of an activity has been decided.
Join a Club Day
Attention ALL STUDENTS and ESPECIALLY CLUB EXECS! If you haven’t heard already, Join a Club day will be taking place for the first time completely online THIS FRIDAY, January 22nd, from 4 to 7 pm. Attendance is mandatory for club execs. If you cannot attend for various reasons, contact Adam or Trudy, and they will work with you to find a solution.
The event will take place on TEAMS. Click the link here to attend: https://bit.ly/2XPZitn.
For students: You will find each club in the “hidden channels” that are on the left. You can also chat and ask questions in the general channel.
In a club’s channel, you can join the video call to talk with the execs or simply chat by text.
Be mindful that every group (aka “team”) on Teams has a number limit of people. If you cannot enter because the team is full, please be patient and wait for others to leave.
For execs: The link is the same for you. You’ll only have to open a video call in the channel of your club. If you are an exec of multiple clubs, you unfortunately cannot have multiple meetings open simultaneously, but you can jump between the channels relatively easily. Another method would be to have different devices open on Teams for the event, though this method has yet to be tested, so we recommend that you try it out yourself first to confirm.
